2019 Re-release
- posted by Blackstar on Saturday, November 24th 2019
It has been a couple of months since I set out to revive CoolMon2. I am proud to say that I have finally managed to make it so. In fact I had done so a couple of months ago, but only now have I uploaded the new installation package.
Ever since then I've been working on making the Editor (OutlawEd) working properly, as it was the last item that needed to be dealt with. While I have spend a couple of months doing that I'm somewhat annoyed with saying that I wasn't entirely succesful. The editor now runs perfectly on Windows 10 and most of you are unlike to ever experience any kind of issue with it. But there was a manor thing that I haven't been able to fix.
OutlawEd works by loading your current wallpaper and dropping it as a background into the editor to show where your config goes on your desktop. Unfortunately Windows 10 offers some new options for desktop wallpaper configuration. One of which is the option "Fit", which is something I myself use. I'm happy to tell you that if your desktop is set to the "fit" option, it will work perfectly.
On the other hand Windows 10 also has another couple of options which are called "Span" and "fill". Those will NOT work with CM2. I have tried to figure out what theses options actually do. But unfortunate I have been unsuccesful in doing so. One I couldn't work out full stop and the other one seems to choose it's center point based on picture recognition, which is way beyond my abilities. But I did get the fit option working, and I think that is the one most people are using, it is atleast the option all the people I know use.
It has been 13 years since this project was last online, and now it is finally again available to people. And it only took a couple of months to do so.
Windows 10 Compatible
- posted by Blackstar on Tuesday, September 24th 2019
Over the past four weeks I have spend quite of number of hours to bring CoolMon 2 up to speed. I have rewritten a lot of program code, actually far less than expected. I have rewritten the plugin manager to ask for elevated execution. I have rewritten the installation instruction to download from this site as opposed to the old CoolMon site. I have updated the Management utilty to old UPD system, which was hardcoded into each plugin. Now it will look for a new upd location in the plugin repository. I have been able to find most of the old plugins, but sadly not all of them seems to run on Windows 10. Looking back over the past couple of weeks it might be because they need admin rights to run. But the only thing I have not run as admin would be CoolMon 2 itself, so if you are experience issues try running Coolmon2.exe as admin.
I have reworked the installer script to download only plugins that I know will work with Windows 10. And I have even made a brand new default configuration, which incidentially might be the config file I have put the most work into ever. But it looks nice and that was the main idea behind it.
After having spend multiple hours on bringing the source code back to speed. I am proud to say that everything works from the installer down to the editor. There is however a slight remainder. Outlaw Ed may not load your wallpaper properly yet. Since Windows XP, Microsoft has added the styling options of Fill, Span and Fit. On my end it currently loads my wallpaper correctly, but I doubt it will do so for all users. I will hopefully fix that in the coming week.
Which leaves me with one simple question. Why go through all this trouble to bring it back? Well the answer really is rather simple. I wanted to add it to my portfolio, as it is the most complex program I have ever worked on and I cannot show off my skills to a new employer without it.
Site resurrection
- posted by Blackstar on Sunday, September 01st 2019
For a while I've been wanting to bring back the old Coolmon site. After a lot of work over the past couple of days, the core site is now back online including both CoolMon 2 and CoolMon One program files. The wiki still isn't back, but I will bring parts (like the plugin documentation) of it back online in the near future. For now wiki links may not work properly. As far as the forum goes it is completely gone, as I have no backup of the database.
Note: All executeables are from August 2006. I don't yet know if they will run on Windows 10. A lot of links in the CM2 system will be pointing to the old website, so for now anything but core, outlawed and plugin manager will not work properly. I plan to go through the source code in the near future and hopefully fix it.

The time has come to release the fruits of all the feedback provided on the BETA release and on this editor release it comes to show. It contains everything from small bug fixed to adding a GUI for events (meaning events should now be very easy to create).

BETA Release: Offline Installer added
- posted by Aaangel on Tuesday, July 4 2006 at 03:54
I've finally forced myself to update the offline installer. It has also been made self extracting for easy use.
NB: We still recommend using the Online Installer if possible, generally the offline installer should only be used if you don't have an internet connection where you intend to install CM2.

BETA Release: Self-extracting Installer added
- posted by Aaangel on Tuesday, July 4 2006 at 01:25
Some confusion seems to have been derived from the use of rar files and I've now added a self-extracting installer to ease the process.
You can get it here, this is the online installer, so you'll need to be connected to the internet while running it.
BETA Release: Fatal error recovered
- posted by Aaangel on Monday, July 3 2006 at 20:45
I would once again like to apologize to the 250 ppl that have downloaded the CM2 Beta ...
This time I had forgot to consider the fact that the default config that the BETA shipped with, was written about a year ago and hadn't been upgraded to the BETA.
It has now been fixed. Uninstalling and reinstalling will correct the problem.

So now it should actually work again, I would like to apologize to all 125 users that have downloaded the beta version over the last 36 hrs, but now it works again.

AVG Detects BackDoor.Iroffer.3.AR in cmsetup.exe [UPDATE]
- posted by Jeff Weston (Bob_2k) on Sunday, February 27 2005 at 02:11
UPDATE: CMSETUP.EXE DID CONTAIN THIS TROJAN/BACKDOOR!
This was not a false positive as we first believed. cmsetup.exe is a self-extracting archive which extracts and runs the actual CoolMon installer. cmsetup.exe was repackaged on November 10, 2004 using a compromised version of WinRAR. This resulted in BackDoor.Iroffer.3.AR being passed on from WinRAR to cmsetup.exe. This does not apply to versions of cmsetup.exe downloaded before November 10.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or problems this may have caused. But we must stress that at the present time, we have no reason to believe that this resulted in any nefarious problems. Setup.exe (the actual CoolMon installer extracted by cmsetup.exe) and CoolMon.exe (installed by Setup.exe) are both clean. No other infected files have been found on systems which have run this installer. FYI, BackDoor.Iroffer is an IRC DCC file transfer bot. No IRC activity has been detected on any machines that have run cmsetup.exe either.
I have repackaged the installer and it is available on our Downloads page.
See this thread for further details.

Installer for CMOne updated
- posted by Aaangel on Wednesday, November 10 2004 at 05:27
There has been some installer confusion lately, we have now address this issue. The installer for CMOne has been updated and no longer requires the user to first extract the installer before it can be used, now a single run of the cmsetup.exe file will do.
It should be noted that this is *not* a release of a new version of CMOne. It is only a new installation package. The files installed remain unchanged from the last installer.

HOAX disguising as the CoolMon Installer??? [DEBUNKED]
- posted by Aaangel on Tuesday, November 9 2004 at 04:30
We have reason to believe that a HOAX is disguising itself as the CoolMon installer.
Update: this may just be a bunch of users exaggerating the "problems" resulting from their confusion over our installation process/download...
Update Nov. 10: There appears to be no hoax. This is just a bunch of silly confused users downloading the source files instead of the installer........

CoolMon in PC World
- posted by Jeff Weston (Bob_2k) on Wednesday, September 15 2004 at 17:08
An interesting bit of news news .... CoolMon has made it into a nice little article over at PC World. You can read the article here. I'm not sure if it will be in the PC World magazine itself, or if it's just an online article. It's unfortunate that the article does not mention CoolMon 2, currently well on its way to becoming beta; but hey, we can't have everything we want from free press, can we?
To any new CoolMon users learning about the project from PC World, welcome! Just a quick FYI though .... the version of CoolMon hosted at PCWorld.com is the zipped version. I would recommend you grab the installer version from our Downloads page. Please check out FAQ and help section if you have any questions, or post in our forums if you don't find your answer there.

The End of MBM
- posted by Jeff Weston (Bob_2k) on Wednesday, July 7 2004 at 19:39
After 7 and a half years, Alex Van Kaam, author and creator of Motherboard Monitor (MBM), is calling it quits. MBM will continue to work in providing CM with temperature and fan speed readings on existing motherboards, but we may run into problems as new motherboards come out onto the market, until we find a suitable replacement program. You can grab the final version of MBM, version 5.3.7.0, here.
The CoolMon Crew would like to thank Alex for all his hard work over the years in programming MBM, supporting us, and providing us with an API that we could use to get readings from his program.

For those of you who don't know, we have stopped development on CoolMon in favor of creating an all-new CoolMon 2. CM2 is an entirely different and far more flexible program than CoolMon 1. We have had an Alpha release out since the end of 2003. Please note that because it is still early in the development process, we have not updated any of our webpages with any information about CM2. If you're interested in reading more, start here. Or if you just want to get a sneak peak at what's going on with it, there are a few example screenshots of CM2 in action in here.

The forums were unfortunately unrecoverable due to some bad backups and other technical problems, but Svend was able to recover the user database, so you should not need to re-register.
